Kiawah Island is a private gated community but Beachwalker Park is a public, state run beach accessible without a pass.
Other areas of the island accessible through the guard gatehouse do require a renters pass, owners pass, or guest of owners pass.
A 45-minute drive from Charleston, Kiawah Island beaches are typically not crowded and nice and wide for easy rigging and launching.

Beachwalker Park is the only public beach on Kiawah Island and can be accessed by turning right onto Beachwalker Drive from Kiawah Island Parkway, just before the first guard gatehouse.
Parking is free in the offseason and paid during the high-season (May through Labor Day).
The wide beach is a short walk from the parking area and typically not crowded even during the high-season, providing plenty of space for rigging and launching.
The southern tip of the island near Captain Sams Inlet can be ridden on most wind directions but beware of strong tidal currents.

The “Salt Flats” along the far eastern end of the island are a remote beach accessible to renters, owners, and guests.
There is no direct beach access so rigging and launching must be done near The Beach Club or farther west unless walking or biking is an option.
The northern tip of the island provides additional riding on NNW, N, NNE, NE winds.
