Clouds will be the deciding factor in today’s forecast as you can see in this first image

Ignoring the clouds for now…today has the potential to be a classic El Norte wind with the bulk of the wind coming from a the massive high pressure you see in the image below. Notice how the white isobar lines are stacked tightest over the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico and the northern Sea of Cortez . This is where the strongest pressure gradient will be located. And the model map shows the strongest winds in that area compared to Baja’s East Cape where Los Barriles and La Ventana reside.

However, in reality the strongest winds will be at Los Barriles and La Ventana. Why? Because those sites both have large inland valleys that heat then curve and suck in and accelerate the El Norte winds.

If the center of the high pressure was just a few hundred miles to the south over the 4 corners we would be seeing large surf and epic swell. But even so today will be impressive.
